for their weakness

Hades's stern hand

rules the earth

and Persephone weeps

silently in the tomb

or her marriage bed

counting the days

helplessly watching

death surrounding all

like an invisible flood

lapping at feet

and knees

and breast

until we are submerged

in winter's long dark night

and the wavering pale dawn

a sick and bilious smile

spreading slowly

disappearing quickly

all is decay
